The table shows
the Boxfish of Southern Australasia which includes species from the
coastline of Australia from Sydney to southern Western
Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
The
boxfish are found from shallow estuarine waters to
the deeper waters of the shelf.
With the Syngnathids
they are enclosed in a bony case. Many Boxfish have
protuberances or spines which are probably for defence.
Some species are very beautiful and offer a potential as
warm temperate aquarium fish.
