Gales
pipefish Campichthys galei: Gale's pipefish is a small species only 60 mm
in length. Found from the Freycinet Peninsula, Shark Bay through south-western
Australia and into the great Australian Bight. Although previously known in
South Australia from only recorded location in South Australia at Boston Island
several more specimens have been identified from the collection of the South
Australian Museum. Also scattered specimens have recently been reported in trawls
from Spencer Gulf,
South Australia.
Probably localised populations of C. galei inhabit shallow rubble
substrates to 18m depth
.
Gales pipefish (Campichthys galei, Duncker 1909) is not well
known with few specimens recorded (Browne, 2003, 2004). Gale's Pipefish
ranges from the Gulf region of South Australia westward to the Shark Bay
area of WA. (Gomon et al., 1994). In recent years, the most eastern
known C. galei have been trawled in Spencer Gulf (B. McDonald,
unpublished data, 2001). Campichthys galei has been found in
shallow sub-tidal rubble substrates and adjacent seagrass beds to 18 m
(Froese and Pauly, 2005, Kuiter 2003). There is apparently suitable
habitat for C. galei in Gulf St Vincent, whether this gulf will
yield specimens remains to be seen.
