The 'Meeting of the Nomenclature Committee' of the 'Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Fauna and Flora' 19th August 2003, adopted Lourie et al. (1999) as the standard taxonomy for the genera Hippocampus.  Lourie et al. (1999) considers  H. elongatus as a synonym of H. angustus.Hippocampus elongatus  WA  Terri Rennie photo

We are revising the taxonomy and the range of the seahorses of southern Australasia for the conservation of the different types of seahorses.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Description: Height 16 cm (Project Seahorse 2004), Height to at Least 16 cm (Kuiter 2000).

Range: Western Australia, sub-tropical (Kuiter 2000).

Distribution: To 10 meters depth.  Very common in the Swan River Estuary in summer (Kuiter 2000).

Habitat: Mixed reef and vegetation habitats
