BRIGG'S CRESTED PIPEFISH

Brigg's Crested pipefish Histiogamphelus briggsii:

Brigg's Crested pipefish (Histiogamphelus briggsii ; McCulloch 1914) is mainly in the Bass Straight region with its range until recently considered to extend to the Robe region in eastern South Australia. However, recent diving surveys by David Muirhead diving at NormanvilleDavid Muirhead and Kevin Smith (pers com) have revealed H. briggsii in the lower part of Gulf St Vincent, South Australia, at Normanville.   The recent surveys have shown that in South Australia H. briggsii is found on the margins of Posidonia seagrass, in small isolated patches of Posidonia, and in the open in sandy areas.  In New South Wales  H. briggsii has been considered uncommon except at some ocean beaches where H. briggsii aggregates in numbers (Kuiter 2000).
