AUSTRALIAN SPINY PIPEHORSE

Australian Spiny pipefish Solegnathus spinosissimus From Queensland to Bass Straight and Tasmania. On soft bottoms from 30-250m. This or an allied species may occur in South Australia.

Spiny pipehorse       

South-eastern Australia, from Bass Strait region and Tasmania, just ranging into southern Queensland.  Occurs on soft-bottom in depth over30 m to 250 m, usually rubble substrate, and near rich invertebrate platform reefs.  Only seen in shallower depths in the southern part of its range in estuaries that are shaded or the water darkened by tanning.  By-catch in trawls and now

exported as tried specimens for Chinese Traditional Medicine.  Before that specimens were washed over the side and died as they were unable to go back to the bottom with their swim bladder inflated.  These were often washed up on the beach after strong on-shore winds.  A large species that can reach 49 cm in length.
