The deep water Spiny Boxfish  is related to Shaw's, the Ornate Cowfish and  the White-barred Boxfish.  The Spiny Boxfish has much larger eyes for its size and is a plainer colour  than the other species to compensate for the low light levels at greater depths.

Deep water species generally captured while trawling but occasionally washed up on beaches.
